Microsoft Releases April 2013 CU for LPE Updates

Some new updates have been released for Lync Phone Edition devices and this update specifically address the issue where the phone and Exchange were never in sync. When voicemail was listened to on a LPE device 9 out of ten times it was not reflected within Exchange and thus the MWI lamp remained on and a logout/in of the phone was the only way to clear it. This was not a problem in the past but at some point I suspect the issue was introduced in a CU.

The Tanjay (CX700) devices receive the update as well as the Aries (Aastra, HP, and Polycom) - the update process is no different from before with an Import-CsDeviceUpdate command. Alternatively you can use the PS command that Dave Howe created to automate the process for you. The PS1 can be found here - just rename from .txt to .ps1 and run from a Lync Management Shell.

As a complete side not, I currently use MangBlog for my blog postings and a recent update fixed a few things and broke a few others - hence the table formatting...I hope to have the issue resolved soon or perhaps I will move to a new platform (it must run under Adobe ColdFusion)...

Your Smartphone – the New Lync Portable Phone

With the recent release of the various Lync 2013 mobile clients a new wave of Lync desktop and portable phones have come into play. Yes – desktop and the concept of a portable phone – all available for Lync 2013. How you ask? Quite simply.

With the new Lync 2013 mobile client allowing you to hold VoIP calls natively and its ability to interact with the system, you end up with two calling scenarios.

1)      You are on a call using your laptop/desktop/Aries phones. You realize you need to ‘leave’ your desk and you have the Lync 2013 mobile client installed on your smartphone. From the full Lync client, you park the call, enter the retrieval code into your mobile client (i.e. within the Lync dialer itself) and it retrieves the call. Very nice – you can move any Lync call from your desktop Lync client or Aries phone to your smartphone.

2)      You use the smartphone as your desk phone. Assuming you have wireless (and who doesn’t) sign-in to the Lync 2013 mobile client. All incoming calls will ring on your smartphone as well – just answer it.

The second option is how we replace a desktop phone with your smartphone. You could also use a Bluetooth headset paired with your smartphone making it a complete mobile package. There are a few things to consider however.

1)      The smartphone is VoIP – that means data. If you are using the smartphone on your cellular data network, you are using your data allotment. That may or may not be a problem, but here in the US most mobile phones have unlimited calling/phone minute plans but the data plans are restricted.

2)      If you answer/transfer the call while you are using the corporate Wi-Fi, that call is tied to the IP and network of that Wi-Fi. Leaving the facility or range of Wi-Fi means the call would need to switch to cellular, IP would change, and call would drop. I would bet that something is done to address this by a third-party sometime soon – something like NetMotion offers on the desktop (if not a solution from NetMotion themselves).

3)      Unfortunately the Lync 2013 mobile client lacks the ability to transfer the call back to the call park service – something I suspect will come in time. So, once the call is answered or transferred to the smartphone that is where it lives.

For a desktop or mobile replacement within the office, the issues above are non-existent. Using the new client you have another means to answer your calls and remain portable (not to mention a single phone device). For those looking for a means to use the smartphone as a way to start in the office and then leave we have a workable yet restricted solution. The key would be to make sure your Wi-Fi is OFF prior to transferring the call. This way, when you leave the office you are already on the cellular data network (just make sure you have the cellular data MB available). The last option of course is to simply transfer the call over PSTN to your smartphone. The real cost there will depend on your cellular plan and remember, you are tying up two phone lines (and Lync resources) as the Lync server infrastructure is conferencing the outside call and your smartphone call.

Try it out – play with the new mobile client – make an audio and video call from it – it is simply amazing and it opens up all kinds of possibilities and scenarios.

Microsoft has released CU December 2012 for Polycom CX500, CX600, and CX3000 Lync Phone Editions

Microsoft has released CU December 2012 for Polycom CX500, CX600, and CX3000 Lync Phone Editions

Yesterday Microsoft released CU January 2013 specifically for Polycom CX 500, CX600, and CX3000 phones. The latest LPE firmware is for both Lync 2010 and Lync 2013. Multiple updates are included within the CU but the most common issues I saw with the phones and does seem to be addressed are white-horizontal lines or just a blank screen (sometimes white, sometimes black). I have not experienced those issues since the firmware update. The update list (and of course all previous updates are included and assumed and not listed) is listed below.

·         2703325 Updates are available that enable the "Music on Hold" feature on Lync Phone Edition telephones

·         2781616 Description of the cumulative updates for Lync Phone Edition that add support for additional languages

·         2781617 A common area phone that is running Lync Phone Edition does not try to sign in after the Front End server restarts

·         2802790 Graphic output is not displayed correctly on the screen of a Polycom telephone that is running Lync Phone Edition

·         2781618 A white screen or a white horizontal line appears on a Polycom telephone that is running Lync Phone Edition

·         2781620 White lines appear on the screen of a Polycom telephone that is running Lync Phone Edition

Microsoft has released CU December 2012 for Lync Phone Edition

Microsoft has released CU December 2012 for Lync Phone Edition (includes MoH for 2nd generation phones)

Yesterday Microsoft released CU December 2012 for Lync Phone Edition. The latest LPE firmware is for both Lync 2010 and Lync 2013. The name of the patch has been changed from Lync 2010 Phone Edition to simply Lync Phone Edition to reflect both systems. The BIG new feature in this release is Music on Hold feature (KB2703325)- you now have static hold music when placing a person internally/externally on hold. Make sure thisis tested in environments where you are providing external music on hold (PSTN) via a gateway and no, the music file is not customizable. However, the lack of this feature has been heard and is now adressed at the phone level for all current phones (i.e. all but the Polycom CX700/LG-Nortel 8540). The older phones have limited memory and will receive limited updates moving forward. Important notes and limitations from the above KB article include:

  • To enable the "Music on Hold" feature, the administrator must set the value of the EnableClientMusicOnHold client policy to "true." To do this, the administrator must run the following cmdlets in the Lync Server Management Shell: Set-CSClientPolicy -Identity <Policy_Identity> -EnableClientMusicOnHold:$TRUE
  • After the update is applied, neither the administrator nor users can configure or customize the audio file that is used for the “Music on Hold” feature. This is because the audio file is embedded in the update.
  • After the update is applied, if more than one call is on hold at the same time, music is played only for the first call. This occurs because the processing power of the telephone is limited.
