Microsoft has released CU April 2014 for Lync Server 2010 and Lync 2010

Microsoft released an update for Lync 2010 last week for both server and the client. The updates are part of the normal quarterly patching cadence and no “new” server features are included – but stability and bug fixes are.

The server patch lists a database update as required. It always states this but as usual you are free to run the Install-CSDatabase command a many times as you want without any issues.

Microsoft has released CU April 2014 for Lync 2013

Microsoft has released an update for Lync 2013 yesterday that corrects multiple issues but most notably it improves sharing performance. The actual increases are still to be determined by myself, but I can also note conversation taskbar icons have changed as well. Before I recommend the latest patch I am going to run with it for a short while. J

One interesting note from the KB article is you may or may not see the correct version number post install. Why? Great question but the note states: “After you install this update, the Lync 2013 version may not be displayed correctly as15.0.4605.1003. Instead, it may be displayed as an earlier version, such as15.0.4605.1000.”

There are four pre-requisites for the Lync patch (this has not recently changed) which include MSO (KB2727096), MSORES (KB2817624), IDCRL (KB2817626), and Lynchelp (KB2817678).

Apple iOS update 7.1 breaks Lync 2013 Voice/Video

It has been discovered that the latest Apple iOS upgrade 7.1 for iPhone, iTouch, and iPad devices breaks current Lync 2013 functionality. Specifically, it has been found that the update creates interoperability issues which causes voice and video to fail when using these devices. Microsoft is aware of the issue as seen in KB2955745 but there is currently no fix or workaround available.

The current solution? Hold off upgrading your Apple devices until a fix is found or you may be without Lync Audio/Video (I say might as Apple iPad Air and iPad Mini do not appear to exhibit the issue).

UPDATE
An update has been released and availabile in the iTunes store and may be foundhere. This update addresses the Apple flaw.

Microsoft has released a March 2014 update for Lync 2013 to address a memory leak

Microsoft has released an update for Lync 2013 that is focused on correcting a single issue – memory leaks during a video call on hardware that has an accelerated H.264 chipset KB2933495. The patch will be offered to all computers via Windows Update and if the situation never applies to you – oh well, just be content to know you are on the latest version of Lync post SP1. There have been issues reported regarding the Gallery View within Lync not working correctly since SP1, but this hotfix does not address that issue. There are two known issues – Persistent Chat file transfers may fail and screen readers may not be able to read the Lync keystrokes.

There are now 4 pre-requisites for the Lync patch which include MSO (KB2727096), MSORES (KB2817624), IDCRL (KB2817626), and Lynchelp (KB2817678).

Microsoft has released SP1 for Exchange Server 2013 Rollups for Exchange 2007/2010

Microsoft has released updates for Exchange Server 2013, 2010, and 2007 as part of their quarterly release cadence. The 2007 and 2010 RUs are bug fixes to the product and not introducing new features (well techincally 2007 a few) while the Service Pack for 2013 adds a load of function and features. Like all past updates and future updates the download is huge as it is the entire bit-set rolled up into the distributable so don’t be alarmed to see a 1.53GB file coming down the pipe.

Information regarding the releases and new features may be found on the TechNet Exchange blogs and the links to the downloads may be found below. The TAP program these past few go-arounds have included the Exchange MVPs as well as external client which means the most critical set of eyes were looking at this 2013 release.

Released: Exchange Server 2013 Service Pack 1

Released: Update Rollup 5 for Exchange 2010 Service Pack 3 and Update Rollup 13 for Exchange 2007 Service Pack 3

Lync Server Design/Planning and Policies

Microsoft Lync Server 2013 has been designed to be a simple install and it is not unusual that the install is not what the client is looking for. Too often an install happens without ever considering the multitude of polices that exist allowing the client to control the features and configuration of Lync. Sure, the client, conferencing, and external policies are looked at but what about the call park configuration or mobility policy and all the others?

Understandably there is confusion as there are tons of polices, options, and configuration that should be reviewed. It does not mean that the defaults need to be changed just simple they should be reviewed. To assist me in the process I have created an Excel template that lists the common policies I review and (for both client and my sake) the explanations of the options placed into comments. While this is not an exhaustive list, it is a great place to start the discussion with clients and yourself when designing a Lync system. Remember – it is always easier to take away/disable features before the users have it.

Microsoft has released CU January 2014 for Lync Server 2010/2013 & Lync Edition Phones

Microsoft has released updates for Lync Server 2013 and Lync Server 2010 on time for their quarterly release cadence. The updates are bug fixes to the product and not introducing new features (none of the 2013 databases are updated in this release). If this CU is being applied to RTM, then follow the instructions here to update or check your version level using Doug Deitterick’s blog post.

In addition to the server patches, the Debugging Tools and Resource Kit has been updated. Unfortunately the updates are actually full installs so you will need to uninstall any previous versions before the apps are “updated”. The good news is the Debugging Tools contain the correct updated TMX file from the January 2014 CU so there is no need to manually replace it with the locally installed copy.

Finally, Lync Edition phones have been update which include the entire line of Aastra, HP, and Polycom phones. Updating them is the same method it has been so no news there.

Hotfix for Office Web Apps Server (WAC/WAS) 2013

Windows 8.1 (IE 11) and Lync Server 2013 now work together

New products and technologies are ever evolving and at times the new technologies do not play nice with the older technologies. Thus was the case with Windows 8.1 and Lync Server 2013 meetings involving PowerPoint presentations. The Office Web Apps Server (aka WAC or WAS server) was incompatible with Internet Explorer 11 – the default browser technology in Windows 8.1.

This past week Microsoft has released a patch for the current build of the WAC server which resolves the issue. As with previous patching of WAC, the process to do so requires the removal of the current settings, applying the patching, and then recreate your settings.

This does sound worse than it is and for a single server farm you would:

from an Elevated Office PowerShell command
Get-OfficeWebAppsFarm (ensure this is the correct server and document settings)
Remove-OfficeWebAppMachine
Apply the Patch
New-OfficeWebAppsFarm –InternalURL (whatever the settings were before, enter here)

The patch, like all preceding, is a patch to the RTM code and as such I have included the link for that download as well. The November patch is the latest and greatest and is in the table as well. A reboot is not supposed to be required but do not be surprised if it is.

Hotfix for Lync 2013 - Presence Corrected

Ever since Microsoft announced spell check within Lync 2013, people (myself included) were excited to finally have access to such a basic feature. However, the new feature came at a cost – the loss of calendar presence integration (oops). Thankfully the Office team has finally provided a patch to correct the loss of basic features and it is available today.

In addition to the presence correction, there are some other updates which can be considered “important” such as presence unknown issues for federated/other pool members in your contact list, duplicate phone number problems, and Windows 7 login issues (among others). The complete list of fixes may be found in the support article listed below.

In addition to the bugs that have been feature some new features were added. Most notably the local recording resolution may now be set to 480p, 720p HD, or 1080p Full HD. Since the client is recording the video it stands to reason the client has to be able to receive the video feed at this format – keep that in mind when you think you want a 1080p recording on your wireless laptop.

In a move to align the communications style application to application the pictures of the participants (assuming you have a picture) into the IM window. Debatable if good or bad – regardless, the feature cannot be disabled. Speaking of pictures, the ability to use a picture hosted on a website is back as well. The option is still controlled by the admin on the client policy but as seen here – the feature is an option.
