Challenge(s): E-mail is money for Kilroy Realty Corporation (KRC) - millions of dollar transactions happen at any given time over e-mail so the need for the system to remain up and functional was paramount. KRC was interested in many of the new highly-available (HA) features found in Exchange Server 2010 specifically multiple-server DAG replication.
Solution(s): After initial conversations with KRC, it was discovered that a domain upgrade in addition to the Exchange 2010 migration was required. In addition to the domain upgrade, an on-premise Certificate Authority (CA) was deployed 3-levels deep (Offline Root, Offline Intermediate, and an Enterprise Online Issuing CA). Located at the primary facility were two mailbox servers, and three Client Access/Hub Transport servers. Located at the remote site was a single all-in-one server with the Mailbox/CAS/HT roles installed.
